1. Libya Desert Challenge - a race with cult factor
The Libya Desert Challenge has reached its 5th year and cult status as the first continuous rally in Libya. No other motorsport event created so much value for Libya and triggered such a huge international press coverage. The Libya Desert Challenge never changed it's name and remains the number one motorsport event in Libya. Everything else is just a follow-up.
This year we are again improving LDC as the ultimate desert experience. These improvements include some enhancements of our team starting with the return of Roberto Musi as race director rally manager and head of marketing.
Unchanged is our concept of start and finish in the south and the spirit of offroad-racing in Libya. This year we achieved even stronger backing by Libyan authorities and we are also proud of the recognition by Libyan media. Increasing coverage by television also makes our race an interesting tool for marketing or sponsoring activities. Still we are not rushing towards a F.I.A. certification at this very moment.
After waiting a while, watching the things moving, we decided to open the registration on 1st October 2009. All set to one simple & flat price, we are able to give you the best value for money. There will be no compromise in security. Your perfect race experience, a professional organization and your safe return are our premiere goals.

2. Our team
The entire team of the LDC consists out of people with race experience. People who know, what they are talking about:
Roberto Musi returned to the LDC as our new rallye manager. After 6 years of trips in desert alone or with friends, from 1992 in other countries and from ‘94 in Libya, he works in desert tours organization, rally raid assistance and FIA and FIM race. Probably he’s the most experienced European people about Libya’s desert. Roberto has 14 years experience as tour operator in Libya, plus numerous F.I.A. rallye participations.
Ali Saidi Saad is our new Libyan partner. Libya’s bigger and most renowned tour operator. Besides being a businessman, Safari Tourisms owner Ali Saidi also is a true desert man. Safari Tourism will help organizing checkpoints and improving catering by a mixed Italian- Libyan crew, used to make wonderful meals in deserts for hundreds of participants. Close to the newly organized desert camps will be luxury tents with bathrooms for those who want more comfort.
Thomas Holzknecht will be the northern European agent and, as usual from the first day of LDC, road book writer and responsible for some other important tasks, too. The founder of LDC is also looking back on multiple starts at Breslau Rallye, El Chott, Baja Germany, Pyramids Rallye and Pharaons Rallye. Besides that, his experience covers more than 75.000 km of dune driving in Libya for road book writing.
Heiko Weber and his checkpoint team are performing several times a year on nearly all mayor events. He already has worked professionally on all four editions of the LDC with his own Tatra 8x8 Trucks and his fleet of 4x4 cars.
Together with many others, we form a team of 50 people dedicated to presenting you the ultimate adventure!
3. Libya Desert Challenge: History and Future
After the first pretour in January 2005, Thomas Holzknecht and Achim Langer (the main driving force behind the first editions of LDC) knew, that racing in Libya could be done. But there was no "handbook" available on this planet that explains how to begin. Fitted with the experience of 3 Years El Chott Rallye in Tunisia, we started to make the second pre-tour, develope tracks and note down the way for the first Libya Desert Challenge - the beginning of a true adventure ...
Over those years we have been facing incredible obstacles and unseen problems because the LDC is taking place in an area so vast. All aspects of organization had to be redefined on the workbench. We worked hard, sometimes learned the hard way, but it´s working now.
Just after the first edition, Roberto Musi joined the LDC staff. He works in Libya's deserts from 1994 and he is one of the most experienced european organizer in desert tours, rally raid assistance and race. His skills are a giant help to improve the services and the level of security of the rally.
This time we spent even more attention to designing a race track, that will allows the best possible rescue of people and vehicles. Moreover, this tracks allow more vehicles to drive and race on them all the stages. Further improvements are planned for our sweep truck service, which will be partially modified. In addition there will be a new big and skilled medical team with useful offroad medical cars.
The LDC has reached - after its 4th edition - the cult status of the first continous rally in Libya besides the Dakar. In six years no other event did create so much value for Libya, triggered such a huge international press coverage and brought (together with El Chott, where Thomas Holzknecht worked 3 Years with his partner) no less than 1500 People to the desert and back.
>> Race-Power
Each explosion in your combustion chambers exerts a powerful pressure on the crankshaft and you have chosen the correct gear so you climb the highest dunes that Libya offers you. You chose the correct angle of drift and you will soon be surfing over the Libyan sands like Silver-Sufer. There is no other choice if you want real race in the real desert. Nothing smells better.
Sportive Regards,
